Cognizant Puts 25,000 Staff Behind OpenAI Enterprise Delivery

Cognizant has formed a new OpenAI Frontier Capability Group bringing together more than 25,000 professionals to deliver OpenAI products, including Codex and ChatGPT, to enterprise clients. The company announced the group on October 30, 2026, saying it will help large organizations apply OpenAI models to software engineering, customer operations, and day-to-day business work, in one of the largest OpenAI delivery commitments announced by a services firm this year.

What the new group will do

Cognizant describes the group as a global delivery organization, not a small specialist team. Its job is to build, run, and support OpenAI-powered systems inside client companies, drawing on staff who already work with the technology rather than starting each engagement from scratch.

The timing reflects a shift in enterprise AI buying. Access to frontier models is no longer the main bottleneck, Cognizant argues. The harder problem is finding enough skilled professionals who know how to build those models into the systems a business already depends on.

Cognizant says more than 21,000 of its associates have already earned over 40,000 OpenAI badges, each awarded for completing learning tracks on OpenAI technologies. The new group organizes that existing capability into a single practice focused on client delivery and long-term support.

Three areas of focus

The group will initially focus on three areas. The first is AI-native software engineering with Codex, where OpenAI’s coding tools support engineers as they write, test, and ship new code. Cognizant says engineers will review every consequential decision in that work.

The second area is application modernization. There, the group will use Cognizant Application Modernizer, powered by OpenAI models, across the full lifecycle, from reverse engineering legacy mainframe code to generating cloud-native replacements. Cognizant cites experience modernizing mainframe systems for more than 500 clients.

The third area is agentic customer operations, applying OpenAI models to sales, service, and support. Cognizant says it has already tested this approach inside its own business, where sales and customer success teams use an OpenAI-based tool to find and pursue new opportunities.

A workforce bet, not just a partnership

Cognizant is framing the move as a workforce commitment as much as a technology alliance. Its Frontier workforce model is developing Frontier Certified Engineers and Frontier Business Operators credentialed directly by frontier-model companies, with a previously announced goal of 5,000 engineers and 10,000 business operators.

The company is also scaling OpenAI across its own sales and customer success operations first, so clients can benefit from methods tested at enterprise scale. That inside-out approach is central to its pitch: the same tools it sells are already reshaping how Cognizant itself finds and serves customers.

OpenAI’s chief revenue officer, Dali Rajic, said Cognizant is helping more enterprises turn AI into meaningful business impact by bringing together a dedicated practice and putting the technology to work across its own operations. Cognizant is one of a select group of Advanced partners in the OpenAI Partner Network.

Why It Matters

Large services firms are now competing on delivery capacity, not just model access. A 25,000-person OpenAI practice signals that Cognizant expects enterprise demand for Codex and ChatGPT work to keep growing, and that clients will judge vendors on whether they can staff and support that work reliably.

The move also shows how OpenAI is reaching enterprises through partners. OpenAI recently doubled Pro limits for its own subscribers, but most large companies still need outside help to redesign workflows, modernize old systems, and govern agent-based tools. That is the gap Cognizant is aiming to fill.

Governance will be part of the test. As agents take on more consequential work, clients will want clear rules for review, accountability, and safety. OpenAI’s rewritten model rules set out five values for its models, and delivery partners will have to turn those principles into everyday engineering practice.

Background

Cognizant is already delivering for clients, including a global biopharmaceutical company where it co-engineered an OpenAI-powered enterprise assistant handling search, content creation, translation, and approvals. That assistant has handled more than 5 million conversations and cut content creation time by 60 percent, according to Cognizant.
