Anthropic has brought Claude Chat and Cowork together for its Enterprise plans, giving companies one Claude that starts with a quick question and escalates to full agentic work in the same conversation. The unified experience, announced on October 23, is generally available on web, desktop and mobile for Enterprise customers. Chat and Cowork first came together for Pro and Max plans in September, so this launch extends the same setup to larger organisations rather than introducing it for the first time. Teams no longer choose between chat and Cowork before starting work, and agentic tasks keep running in the cloud even after someone closes their laptop.

Chat And Cowork Become One Claude

Conversations now begin as a chat, and a simple question still gets a quick answer. When a task needs to run code or work with files, Claude continues in the cloud and returns the finished document, analysis or deck. Because the work runs in Anthropic’s cloud environment, it keeps going after someone closes their laptop, and they can pick it up on the web, desktop or mobile. Chats, projects, connectors, skills and plugins all carry over to the new unified experience.

Agentic work runs in cloud sessions that Anthropic manages, with each session in its own isolated virtual machine. For Claude Enterprise, network egress is off by default and connector credentials are kept outside the sandbox, giving security teams central visibility and control over work that previously might have run across separate tools.

Security Controls Carry Over

Organisations that have already approved Claude chat keep the enterprise controls they already use, including single sign-on and the Compliance API. Anthropic says it still encrypts data in transit and at rest and does not use it for model training by default. Organisations using zero data retention for Claude Code, a HIPAA-ready configuration or customer-managed encryption keys stay on their current configuration, while other Enterprise admins manage the rollout in Organisation settings.

Admins Get New Cost Controls

Claude Enterprise pricing stays usage-based, and Anthropic says its newest models are cheaper to run than their predecessors. Billed through usage, Claude Opus 5.5 costs 40% less to run than Claude Opus 5 on typical workloads, and Claude Sonnet 5.5 costs up to 30% less than Claude Sonnet 5 for most work. Because agentic work can use more tokens than a quick chat, admins get four controls: Efficient mode, a new setting that keeps the unified experience on Sonnet and Haiku models; model entitlements that set which models each role can use; spend limits at the organisation, group and member level; and pooled group budgets that give a group one shared monthly amount to draw from.

Why It Matters

The unification matters because it removes the last seam between asking an AI a question and handing it a job. Enterprise buyers have been wary of agent tools that run out of sight, and Anthropic’s pitch here is control as much as capability: isolated sessions, egress off by default, role-based access and spend limits are all aimed at IT teams deciding whether agents are safe to deploy widely. The cost figures point the same way, with cheaper models softening the token bills that agentic work runs up. If the unified experience sticks, Claude stops being two products that share a name and becomes the single front door to Anthropic’s enterprise offering, which is exactly where its rivals are heading too.

Background

Anthropic has been widening its enterprise footprint through 2026, including teaming with Hg to sell AI expertise across Europe, while Claude itself has had a bumpy run in production, suffering three overnight outages in six hours in late October.
