Google’s AI Overviews have started answering searches that have no answer — including misspelled queries and strings of apparently random characters that return no matching web pages at all. Instead of a results page, searchers get a generated response that politely suggests they may have made a typing error and asks them to clarify what they meant.
The behaviour was spotted by members of the SEO community and reported on October 12. In the examples shared, the AI Overview treated keyboard-smash input as a conversational prompt rather than a failed search, a sign of how far generative answers now operate beyond classic keyword matching: no documents need to exist for the AI layer to produce a reply.
It is a small story with a large implication. If AI answers appear even where there is nothing to rank for, the share of searches that end without a single traditional result keeps growing — and the definition of “visibility” for publishers stretches from ranking in the ten blue links to being understood, spelled correctly or not, by the model answering on Google’s behalf.
