Google Drops the Work-Account Ban on Gemini Business Tools

Google has quietly cleared the last paperwork obstacle keeping work accounts out of Gemini's Business Profile tools. Its help page no longer says the feature is unavailable to people who sign in with a work or school account, the wording it carried as recently as 6 November. The change lines up with Google's Small Business Bulletin from 5 November, which said Workspace access was “rolling out now”. Businesses that manage their listing through a corporate account can now link it to Gemini, though the rollout is gradual and an admin must switch Gemini on first.

What changed

The bulletin, posted on 5 November by Lisa Landsman, a Google executive, describes Workspace access as “rolling out now”. Until now, the Gemini connection for Business Profile only worked when the owner signed in with a personal Google account. A Workspace administrator has to enable Gemini app access in the Admin console before employees can link a profile.

Once linked, owners can ask Gemini to handle profile tasks in plain language. The tools cover hours, contact details and links, drafting replies to reviews, creating posts, and summarising what customers say in reviews. Owners can also upload photos and videos into the chat from a device or Google Photos, and check performance numbers and search keywords for the listing.

The help page now agrees

The clearest sign of the change is Google's own help page for the Gemini connection. As of 6 November it still said: “For now, this feature isn't available if you sign in with a work or school Google Account.” That sentence is now gone.

The page now lists only three conditions: the feature works wherever the Gemini web app is supported, it is not available to owners or managers of more than one verified profile, and it works only in the web app. The earlier version, archived on 13 October, excluded the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom; that regional exclusion is gone.

Also in the bulletin

The same bulletin adds a “Generate hours” tool to the Business Profile hours editor: owners type their schedule in plain language — appointment-only days, a lunch closing — and Google fills in the hours fields. The tool is available in select regions and languages, and owners can review and edit the generated hours before saving them.

The bulletin also carried the Maps messaging change covered earlier: the Message button now sits beside Call on Google Maps listings on Android and iOS. Businesses that already offer chat can now be messaged from the most prominent spot on their listing, including through WhatsApp. Google added Messenger chats to Business Profiles in October.

Our Read

The Workspace rollout matters because it removes the personal-account workaround that kept many businesses out of Gemini's profile tools. A company that manages its listing through a corporate account no longer needs an employee's Gmail login to use AI help with photos, posts and hours. That is the difference between a demo feature and one real businesses can adopt.

The quiet help-page edit is the real news here, not the bulletin. Google announced the rollout on 5 November, but its own documentation contradicted it for two days. The contradiction is now resolved in the rollout's favour, which is a stronger signal than a press line: documentation is where Google tells owners what actually works.

Why It Matters

Business Profiles are where customers meet a business, and Gemini is becoming the way owners manage that listing. Opening the tools to Workspace accounts reaches the businesses most likely to use them: operators and agencies on corporate logins. If the rollout sticks, the remaining limits — one profile per owner, Gemini web app only — become the friction to watch.

Background

Google connected Gemini to Business Profile in June, letting owners manage a listing through chat, and added business notebooks that hold a profile's chats and website. The connection arrived as Google pushed AI deeper into local search, including Gemini-powered answers in Maps. The Workspace rollout is the next step in that push, extending the same tools to business accounts.
