The local search industry is reorganising around a new question. It used to be whether a business ranks in the Google Maps pack; increasingly, owners want to know whether AI assistants recommend them at all. That shift is behind this week’s launch of Maptimal, a service co-founded by Google Maps ranking specialist Paul Truscott, aimed at auditing and optimising both Maps visibility and a business’s presence inside AI-generated answers.
The gap it targets is measurement. Most local businesses have no way to see whether tools like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT or Gemini name them — or name a competitor — when a customer asks “who is the best plumber near me?” Services like this new entrant promise owners a clear picture of where they stand in Maps and in AI recommendations, the two places local demand now gets divided.
Strip away the launch news and the signal is structural: local SEO is splitting into two disciplines, map-pack optimisation and answer-engine visibility, and the second one barely has agreed metrics yet. Businesses that treat their profiles, reviews and web presence as inputs to AI answers — not just listings — are the ones positioning for where local search is going.
