Alibaba’s Qwen team has started the countdown to its next flagship model, without naming it. On November 6, the team’s official account posted four words, “The becoming begins,” beside a poster of birds forming a giant fish over the sea. The post passed two million views within a day, yet it gives no model name, no release date, no size and no price. The teaser lands as the launch window rumoured for this week runs out with no model in sight.
What the teaser actually says
Almost nothing, and that is the point. The post carries a single image and four English words. The poster shows a flock of birds shaped like a fish over the sea at dusk, with a line of Chinese left unfinished: “In the northern sea there is a fish, and its name is,” followed by a blank.
The line opens the Zhuangzi, a text about 2,300 years old, in which the fish Kun grows until it turns into the giant bird Peng. The metamorphosis reading comes from commenters, not from Alibaba, which has said nothing about the poster. The image is a riddle; the company has offered no key to it.
What is verifiable is the response: the post passed two million views and drew more than 17,000 likes within a day. Trackers confirmed that no Qwen4 repository, model card or price list exists anywhere. There is nothing to download, nothing to configure and nothing to benchmark.

The launch window that just closed
The teaser arrives at the end of a week that was supposed to bring the model itself. At the Apsara Conference in Amsterdam on October 29, Alibaba Cloud chief technology officer Feifei Li reportedly told attendees that Qwen4 would arrive “next week,” according to people posting from the room.
Taken literally, that meant November 2 to 8, and the week is about to end without a launch. A slide shown during the Qwen team’s talk listed four variants — Max, Flash, Plus and 27B — marked “coming soon.” Alibaba has confirmed none of it through an official channel.
The week did produce one Alibaba surprise instead: a mystery model called Qoduck appeared in Alibaba’s Qoder coding tool, with its identity undisclosed. It is a reminder that Alibaba’s teams can ship without warning — and that a teaser and a launch are different things.
What is confirmed and what is not
Very little is confirmed, and the gaps are the story. Alibaba has said Qwen4 is “currently in training,” a line from its September 22 press material. Its researchers have shipped Qwen3.8-Flash-Next, described as a preview of the Qwen4 architecture — its configuration file even uses the model type qwen4_exp.
A code update also assigned Qwen4 identifiers a one-million-token context window, a concrete technical detail in an otherwise empty file. Everything else is unconfirmed: no release date, no sizes, no prices and no licence have been announced. Until Alibaba publishes model cards, the November 2–8 window remains an unconfirmed timeline drawn from a single stage comment.
A check of the Qwen organisation on Hugging Face on November 8 returns no Qwen4 repository at all; the latest uploads are Qwen3.8-series models from November 7. Online speculation about dates, including a reading of the poster’s colours pointing to November 30, is unconfirmed and is not repeated here as fact.
Our Read
Alibaba is doing what every major lab now does: teasing a flagship with a riddle instead of a datasheet. The poster is well chosen — a fish becoming a bird is a transformation, and transformation is exactly what a generational model change promises. But a poster is marketing, not a release.
The gap between the two is where rumours breed. The “next week” line was never an official announcement, and treating it as one is how launch windows get “missed” when nothing was ever promised. The honest position is that Qwen4 is close but undated, and the teaser says the team is ready to talk.
What is missing is the part developers actually need: weights, a model card and a licence. Until those appear, the only sensible advice is to watch the Qwen organisation on Hugging Face and Alibaba’s Model Studio, where the first identifier will show up — and to ignore any date that does not come from Alibaba itself.
Why It Matters
Qwen is the open model family every rival is measured against. Alibaba reported more than three billion downloads and over 300,000 derivative models at its September Apsara conference, and Qwen3.8 shipped with 2.4 trillion open weights. Whatever Qwen4 turns out to be, its licence and its sizes will shape what developers can build, host and fine-tune for the next year.
The stakes are higher than a version number. Qwen powers Apple Intelligence in China under a deal announced on October 31, so the next generation will feed directly into iPhones sold there. A strong open Qwen4 also raises the bar for every Western lab that sells openness as a feature rather than a default.
Background
The Qwen3.8 generation has already been put through unusual tests. Nous Research retrained Qwen3.8-27B to answer from Western values, cutting state-aligned answers from 22 percent to under one percent on its own test. Microsoft’s Foundry now runs Qwen models locally on developer GPUs, a sign of how far the family has spread beyond Alibaba’s own cloud.
