Airship, the mobile customer experience company, has introduced new artificial intelligence capabilities that move personalisation decisions onto the user’s phone itself, rather than waiting on a cloud server every time a screen loads, the company announced. The centrepiece is on-device decisioning AI, which pairs a customer’s profile data with live, in-the-moment context — what screen they are on, what is in their cart, how they are behaving in the app — to choose the right experience instantly. For brands, the pitch is speed and privacy at once: no server delay, less cloud compute, and customer data that stays on the device where the decision is made.
The Moment A Screen Loads
“The moment that matters most is the instant a screen loads, and that’s exactly when waiting on the cloud costs you,” said Mike Herrick, Airship’s chief technology officer. “So we moved that decision directly onto the device. Brands bring what they already know about their customer from their data warehouse, the app adds what’s happening in the moment, and the right experience is chosen instantly.” The idea is simple to state and hard to deliver: personalisation is only personal if it reflects the present moment, and the present moment changes faster than a round trip to a server can track.
Airship’s approach builds on its Decisioning AI for modern mobile platforms such as iOS 27. Instead of segmenting customers in advance and showing everyone in a segment the same message, on-device decisioning evaluates contextual logic locally when a screen loads. A shopper with an abandoned cart sees a nudge to finish the purchase; a traveller checking a boarding pass sees travel help, not a generic promotion.
Zero Copy, Live Feeds, No Developer Bottleneck
Three supporting capabilities make the on-device decision useful rather than merely fast. First, zero-copy data integrations read profile data directly from leading data warehouses without duplicating it, which Airship says safeguards customer privacy by keeping a single source of truth. Second, external data feeds pull live information, such as weather or store inventory, directly into messages at render time, so a promotion does not go stale between sending and opening. Third, Data Branching routes each user down the best journey based on real-time, on-device context, without requiring developer resources for every variation.
Automated action triggers turn those insights into instant actions, such as helping customers complete abandoned shopping carts, while built-in analytics send behaviour insights back to the brand’s warehouse in an open Parquet format. Together, the pieces describe a shift in where marketing technology runs: less in a distant cloud, more in the app, at the moment of interaction.

Trust As A Feature, Not A Footnote
Airship is backing the new capabilities with its ISO 42001 certification, the global standard for AI management systems, which the company says gives enterprise security, legal and product teams confidence that its on-device decisioning is built on privacy-by-design principles and robust security controls. As AI moves into customer-facing decisions, brands face questions not only about whether personalisation works, but about whether it can be explained, governed and audited.
“Relevance at scale is the new standard for modern enterprise brands,” said Brett Caine, Airship’s chief executive. “For over 15 years, our mobile expertise across billions of customer journeys has pioneered how the world’s leading brands connect with customers on their most personal devices. Today, we’re taking that further with on-device decisioning AI to help brands deliver the right in-app experience the moment customer intent is determined.”
The company will showcase the capabilities live as lead sponsor of Elevate’26 in London on November 4–5, where Caine will open the summit and Herrick will join U-Haul’s David LoPresti to demonstrate on-device AI in production. LoPresti’s comment captures the appeal: “It’s easy to build experiences around segments, but even inside a segment, customers value different things.”
Why It Matters
This matters because mobile personalisation has hit a latency and trust wall. Cloud-based personalisation can be powerful, but it is slow at the exact moment it needs to be fast, and it requires moving customer data to where the decision is made. On-device decisioning reverses that flow: the data stays put, the decision travels to the data, and the experience arrives without a perceptible pause. For brands competing on mobile, where a slow or irrelevant screen is a lost customer, that difference is commercial, not cosmetic.
It also matters as a sign of where agentic and decisioning AI is heading. The same push toward agents acting in the moment, with local context, is visible across marketing and workplace tools, as in our report on Sprinklr’s six marketing AI agents, our report on Concentrix’s live voice translation and our report on Dayforce’s agentic workforce platform. Airship’s bet is that the next customer-experience advantage comes not from a bigger cloud model, but from a smaller, faster decision on the device.
Background
Airship describes itself as a mobile-first customer experience platform, and says it invented the first push notification, the first mobile boarding pass and the first live activity, with thousands of global brands using its cross-channel experiences and orchestrated journeys. Its new on-device decisioning AI extends that history from delivering messages to deciding, in the moment, which experience each customer should see.
