OpenAI has widened the canvas for advertising inside ChatGPT, rolling out a broader standard ad format, opening multi-image ads to all advertisers in beta, and taking its Shopify integration beyond its original market. The changes arrived in the company’s weekly update to advertisers on October 30, and they land as ChatGPT’s ad business reaches 89 countries worldwide. Existing campaigns carry over automatically, so advertisers do not need to rebuild creative to use the new wider format.
A wider card for desktop conversations
The headline change is a new, wider standard ad unit. OpenAI described it as a broader ad card that uses more of the conversation width on desktop, giving advertisers more room to present a product without changing how the ad works. The format applies to existing campaigns and creative, so advertisers get the new layout without taking any action.
For advertisers, the practical point is reach within the chat. A wider card can carry a stronger headline, a clearer image and a more visible call to action, all inside the conversation where a shopper is comparing options. OpenAI has not published performance figures for the new format, so any claim about higher clicks would be speculation at this stage.
Multi-image ads open to every advertiser
Multi-image ads are also moving out of limited testing. OpenAI said the format is now available in open beta to all advertisers, letting a campaign show more than one image in a single placement. That matters for sellers whose products need several angles, such as furniture, fashion or consumer electronics, where one picture rarely closes the sale.
The beta label still matters. An open beta means the format is broadly available but still being refined, so advertisers should expect tweaks to how multi-image placements render and report. OpenAI has not said when the format will leave beta, and it has not detailed which campaign types qualify first.

Shopify goes international, and the older news returns
The third item in the update is Shopify integration, which OpenAI said is now available internationally. The integration connects a merchant’s store with ChatGPT advertising, letting product information and conversion tracking flow between the two systems. For merchants outside the original launch market, that removes a barrier that previously kept them from running product ads in the chat.
Not everything in the email is new. The update restates OpenAI’s expansion of ChatGPT Ads to 26 countries, taking the service to 89 countries worldwide, and repeats the company’s figure of more than 100,000 advertisers having run campaigns. Those milestones were announced on October 21, so they describe the scale the new formats land on, not fresh expansion this week.
The email also notes that creative enhancements are being switched on automatically for self-serve campaigns, a change OpenAI flagged earlier in October. The feature lets the system adapt headlines, descriptions and imagery to the conversation, which advertisers should weigh against their own approval controls.
The ad update follows a busy month for OpenAI’s consumer business, which recently doubled usage limits for ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium plans instead of imposing a planned cut. That move showed OpenAI competing on value for paying users, while the ad formats build a separate revenue line from advertisers.
Why It Matters
ChatGPT’s ad business is still young, and these formats show OpenAI moving from simply selling placements to refining how they look and perform. Wider cards and multi-image units borrow from decades of display advertising, but they arrive inside a conversation, where attention is focused and the shopper’s intent is already clear.
The timing also reflects a wider race. Google has been expanding advertising inside its own AI answers, taking AI Mode ads to more countries and testing sponsored placements in shopping results, so OpenAI’s format upgrades keep its own ad product competitive for brands splitting budgets between search and chat.
What advertisers should watch next is measurement. Wider and multi-image formats only earn their keep if OpenAI’s reporting shows they lift clicks and sales rather than simply taking more space. Until the company shares results, the formats are best read as a maturing ad product, not proof of one.
Background
ChatGPT Ads has grown from its first tests into a business spanning 89 countries, and the October 30 update is the latest step in turning that reach into formats advertisers can actually use.
