Google announced on 28 October 2026 that it is taking ads in AI Mode to ten new countries, while launching multiturn ads in the United States so sponsored results can appear in follow-up queries. The expansion covers Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore, with Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. Google says ads in AI Mode will remain clearly labelled as Sponsored.

Where The Ads Are Going

The ten new markets span four continents, and the list is notable for what it includes as well as what it leaves for later. Pakistan, Nigeria, Kenya, Malaysia and the Philippines join larger English-language markets such as Canada and Australia, a mix that suggests Google is testing AI Mode advertising well beyond its earliest adopters.

Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom are named only as next, for the fourth quarter of 2026, rather than as part of this launch. Google frames the move as a response to how search itself is changing.

Queries in AI Mode run, on average, three times longer than traditional searches, the company says, because people ask conversational, multi-part questions rather than typing short keywords. That longer context, Google argues, helps it understand what a person is looking for and connect them with businesses that match the need.

What Multiturn Ads Change

Multiturn ads, launching in the United States, address a specific gap in conversational search. In a normal search, an ad answers one query and the interaction ends. In AI Mode, a person refines the question, asks follow-ups and narrows options over several turns, and until now there was no sponsored presence in that later part of the conversation.

Multiturn ads let advertisers appear in those follow-up queries too. Google says its research shows people are comfortable with ads in AI Mode and find them highly relevant. It also says click-through rates are already similar between sponsored and organic product list items within AI Mode.

The company gives no date range for that comparison in its announcement, so the claim should be read as Google’s own research finding rather than an independently audited result.

The Earnings-Week Context

The announcement lands in the same week Alphabet reported its third-quarter results, a quarter in which Google Cloud grew sharply while the company burned cash on its infrastructure build-out, as covered in Alphabet’s cloud quarter. Search advertising remains the engine that funds that build-out, which makes the monetisation of AI Mode a question investors watch closely.

How fast sponsored results can scale inside conversational answers, without driving people away, is now a live commercial test. That test is also a design question. AI Mode answers are meant to feel like a conversation, and sponsored results that interrupt the flow could undermine the product.

Google’s answer, for now, is labelling and relevance: ads stay marked as Sponsored, and the company says it will keep testing new formats to keep them helpful. Whether users agree will show up in usage, not in the announcement.

Opening Search To Outside Developers

The ads expansion sits alongside Google’s wider opening of its search surfaces to third parties. The company recently opened Search and the Gemini app to outside developers through a connected apps platform, as covered in Google’s connected apps move. Taken together, the two moves point in the same direction: Google’s conversational surfaces are becoming places where outside businesses, whether advertisers or app developers, can reach users directly.

Why It Matters

AI Mode is where Google’s search business meets its AI ambitions, and advertising is where that meeting becomes a business model. If sponsored results work inside multi-turn conversations, Google can monetise its most advanced search surface without waiting for users to return to a traditional results page. If they feel intrusive, the company risks pushing people toward rival chatbots that have, so far, been slower to commercialise.

For advertisers, the practical change is narrower but real. Campaigns built for short keywords must now work inside longer, messier conversations, and success will depend on matching the intent of a follow-up question, not just the first query. The ten new countries also widen the testing ground considerably, giving Google data from very different markets before the larger Brazil, Mexico and United Kingdom launches.

Background

AI Mode is Google’s conversational search surface, where users ask questions in natural language and receive AI-generated answers with links to sources. Ads inside it are labelled Sponsored, and Google says it will continue testing formats as the surface expands.
