Claude Can Now Read Your Bank Account — But Can’t Touch a Cent

Anthropic has launched Personal Finance in Claude, letting subscribers link their bank and card accounts and ask the chatbot about their money in plain language. The feature, rolling out in beta this week to Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers in the United States, connects accounts through Plaid and answers questions about balances, spending and bills. Access is strictly read-only: Claude cannot move, manage or invest money, and it never sees a bank password.

What it does

The feature works like a conversation about money. Ask where the money went this month and Claude adds up spending across every connected account, sorting it by category. In Anthropic’s example, a month’s spending comes to $4,309.37, with more than half going to rent and utilities and $1,024.51 to food and drink.

Follow-up questions dig deeper into whether spending is up, what is still due, and what will be left before payday. In the example, Claude spots a membership renewal, lists four payments due before payday, and says $1,393.22 will remain. Users can also ask for a weekly spending chart, a calendar of what is due, or a dashboard they keep adjusting.

Claude can also flag what is easy to miss: charges that hit twice, unexpected fees, or a bill that has crept up all year. It explains terms in plain language too, answering questions such as what an APR is and how much interest it has cost that year.

Read-only by design

Anthropic is drawing a hard line around what Claude can do with the data. The access is read-only, the feature is not designed to give investment advice, and Anthropic warns that Claude can make mistakes, so users should ask which transactions sit behind a number and check important figures with their bank.

There are no ads or sponsored recommendations, and Anthropic offers no credit cards, loans or savings accounts of its own. Accounts connect only when the user signs in to their bank through Plaid, which handles the sign-in, so Claude never asks for or sees a bank password. An account can be unlinked at any time.

For the accounts a user connects, Claude sees the bank’s name, each account’s name, type and last four digits, balances and credit limits, and up to two years of transactions. Chats inside the Personal Finance hub are not used to train Anthropic’s models, while anything shared outside the hub falls under the user’s normal privacy settings.

Our read

This is Anthropic’s biggest consumer move in months, and it is a direct answer to ChatGPT, which added finance tools in May. A chatbot that can see what you spend becomes far more useful than one that only answers questions, but it also has to be far more trusted.

Anthropic’s bet is that a strict read-only line, no ads and no training on hub chats is enough to earn that trust. The timing also matters: Anthropic is heading toward a public listing, and a feature that touches everyday money is the kind of mass-market hook a pre-IPO company wants in the news.

The risk is accuracy, and Anthropic does not hide it. A wrong total in a casual chat is an annoyance; a wrong balance before a bill is due is a real problem. That is why the launch pairs every answer with its underlying transactions, and why the read-only boundary is stated so plainly.

Why It Matters

Personal Finance moves Claude from a work tool into everyday life, into the same space where people already manage their money. If it works, it gives Anthropic a daily habit and a reason for subscribers to stay. If the numbers are wrong or the privacy line slips, it will damage trust faster than any coding feature could build it.

Background

The launch was not entirely a surprise. In October, unreleased screens showed Claude preparing a Personal Finance feature with Plaid bank links, though Anthropic had not announced it at the time. Anthropic has also been expanding Claude for consumers, including message threads that let conversations continue across sessions.
