Einride will broaden its partnership with NVIDIA by testing Alpamayo, the chipmaker’s AI reasoning model for driving, in its self-driving trucks, the Swedish freight company said on Wednesday — a step it says should speed up expansion of its autonomous freight services while lowering development costs.
Alpamayo is NVIDIA’s vision-language-action model: it interprets the driving environment, recommends vehicle actions and explains its reasoning. Einride plans to adapt the model using data from its own commercial freight operations, and says it will be the first trucking operator to deploy it.

Shadow Mode First, Live Road Evaluation In 2027
The rollout is deliberately staged. Einride and NVIDIA will first test Alpamayo in “shadow mode”, where the model runs alongside the existing systems without controlling the vehicle. Its decisions are compared against Einride’s own driving software and against human drivers, building an evidence base before the model is trusted with the wheel.
A live road evaluation is planned for the second half of 2027. Einride expects the technology to shorten development cycles and make it easier to extend autonomous driving to new vehicle types and routes — the two constraints that decide how fast a freight operator can grow beyond its first corridors.
The deal builds on a broader NVIDIA tie-up announced in September covering autonomous driving, safety systems and AI model training. NVIDIA’s GTC Berlin announcement on Wednesday placed Einride inside its Hyperion programme as well: the company is building its next-generation Einride Driver on the Hyperion platform, using the Halos safety system, Alpamayo and NVIDIA Cosmos open world models to develop and validate the system.
A Cab-Less Truck Already In Regular Service
Einride is not starting from a prototype. In September it rolled out what it described as the first cab-less autonomous truck operating in regular service on public roads in Germany, transporting goods for the supermarket chain Lidl — a vehicle with no driver’s cab at all, supervised remotely rather than driven.
That operating history is what makes the Alpamayo test different from a lab integration. Einride’s adaptation data comes from commercial freight runs — real cargo, real schedules, real weather — and the shadow-mode comparison runs against a driving stack that already carries paying loads. NVIDIA, for its part, highlighted Einride at GTC Berlin among several European mobility companies showcasing autonomous applications on the Hyperion platform, alongside Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Bolt.
Why It Matters
Freight is the autonomy market where the economics are easiest to prove: trucks run fixed routes, fleets feel driver shortages directly, and a model that explains its reasoning is easier to certify and insure than one that cannot. Alpamayo’s explainability is therefore not a cosmetic feature for Einride — it is the thing regulators, insurers and enterprise customers will ask about first, and the staged shadow-mode plan is built to produce exactly that evidence. For NVIDIA, a first trucking deployment extends the Hyperion and Alpamayo stack from robotaxis into logistics, the pattern tracked in why NVIDIA powers the AI boom and in this week’s Cosmos world-model expansion. For rival freight-autonomy firms, the deal raises the bar: competing with a reasoning model trained on a partner’s commercial fleet data is harder than competing with a chip. The safety-evidence approach also parallels NVIDIA’s OpenShell containment model for software agents — test in the open, prove behaviour, then grant control.
Background
Einride, founded in Sweden in 2016, built its name on electric and autonomous freight: pod-like cab-less trucks, a freight-mobility platform, and early regulatory approvals for driverless operation on public roads in Europe and the United States. NVIDIA’s Alpamayo family, introduced as its reasoning stack for autonomous vehicles, is designed to handle the long tail of unusual road situations by reasoning through them step by step rather than reacting by pattern alone. The September partnership joined the two; Wednesday’s announcement puts a named model, a testing method and a 2027 road date on it.
