Display and Video 360 API v5 concept: connected screens with video ads and data streams between them

Google has launched Display & Video 360 API version 5 in public beta, adding new targeting controls, Digital Out of Home support and updated audience and inventory management capabilities for advertisers that manage campaigns programmatically. According to Search Engine Land, the update was announced on October 22 and moves Customer Match audience management out of the API entirely, directing advertisers to Google’s Data Manager API instead. Developers can begin testing the public beta now, though Google warns breaking changes are possible before the stable release.

What Is New In Version 5

Google introduced several updates in the beta. Advertisers get full management of advertiser-level YouTube video and channel exclusion targeting, which helps keep placement controls consistent for brand suitability. There is support for Digital Out of Home insertion order resources, extending the API’s reach to advertising that appears on digital screens in physical locations. Inventory management gains updated inventory source retrieval and targeting capabilities, and audience targeting has been refactored for Demand Gen and YouTube ad groups.

The most consequential change is the removal of Customer Match audience management features. Advertisers and developers using those capabilities must migrate their Customer Match workflows to the Data Manager API. The separation pushes audience data management into one product and campaign management into another, and any team with custom Display & Video 360 integrations built around Customer Match will need to rework those workflows now rather than at the stable release.

How Advertisers Should Approach The Beta

Because version 5 is in public beta, Google says developers should consult the release notes and migration guide before upgrading from v4 and should update client libraries to their latest versions first. Teams should review their v5 documentation, identify affected integrations and plan their migration, with particular attention to Customer Match workflows, audience targeting configurations and inventory source management. The beta status also means monitoring Google’s release notes is not optional — features and behavior can still change before the final cut.

One deail worth noting: the YouTube exclusion controls at the advertiser level close a gap that brand-safety-conscious advertisers have complained about for years, since channel and video exclusions previously required per-campaign management or workarounds. Centralizing them through the API makes it practical for large accounts to apply consistent placement policies across hundreds of campaigns, which is especially relevant as advertisers spend more on YouTube inventory through Display & Video 360 rather than buying it direct.

Why It Matters

The Display & Video 360 API is the backbone for advertisers and third-party tools that manage display and video buying at scale, so even beta changes ripple through reporting, automation and agency workflows. Full advertiser-level YouTube exclusions address a persistent brand-safety ask, and Digital Out of Home support recognizes that programmatic buying now includes physical-world screens. But the Customer Match removal is the headline for engineering teams: it is a forced migration with real engineering cost, arriving as Google keeps consolidating data management into Data Manager. Advertisers that ignore the beta and wait for the stable release risk discovering too late that their audience pipelines no longer work.

Background

Google’s ad platform APIs have been on a steady refresh cycle this year — the Google Ads API moved to twice-monthly releases and target and budget changes stopped resetting the learning period, each change nudging advertisers toward more automated, API-driven management. Meanwhile Performance Max keeps gaining automatic creative features like sourced videos and landing page images. The DV360 v5 beta fits the same pattern: more programmatic control in some places, and firmer opinions about where data work should live in others.
