Google DeepMind announced Genie 4 on Monday, October 27, 2026, a new world model that generates interactive simulations in real time, complete with sound, physics and people who move, speak and respond to instructions as the scene unfolds. Unlike a video clip that plays back a fixed sequence, a Genie 4 world keeps running while the user steers it, changing the weather, moving the camera or introducing a new person or object with a plain-language prompt. The model is rolling out first as a research preview for trusted testers, before reaching Google AI Ultra subscribers in Project Genie and early access partners on the Gemini API and Google AI Studio.

Worlds That Keep Running While You Steer Them

A world model is a different kind of AI from a chatbot or a video generator. Instead of answering a question or rendering a finished clip, it simulates an environment frame by frame, deciding what happens next as the user moves through it. Genie 4 is natively multimodal: music, ambient noise and interactive dialogue are generated together with the world itself, rather than layered on afterwards.

Four Advances Over The Previous Generation

DeepMind frames Genie 4 around four capabilities. The first is real-time shaping: natural-language edits to weather, camera and characters, with Gemini adapting each prompt to the scene. The second is realism in physics and human action. Genie 4 simulates aerodynamics, collisions and other physical behaviour, and DeepMind calls its simulated people the most dramatic leap, with characters that move naturally and respond organically to their surroundings.

The third is sound. Genie 4 is DeepMind’s first real-time world model to generate audio natively, so every world carries the ambient sound of its own setting, from wind in trees to waves on a beach. The harder step is speech: characters converse and react to inputs or events as they happen. The fourth is reasoning. Gemini 3.8 Flash acts as a guiding agent inside the loop, watching the scene, breaking goals into steps and reviewing frames to check that each step succeeded, adapting its plan when the world shifts or the user intervenes.

Choosing the right Gemini model matters here, because the guiding agent is not a generic assistant bolted on at the end. Gemini Omni anchors the simulations in real-world appearance and behaviour, while other Gemini models supply the reasoning that keeps a simulation coherent. DeepMind is also pairing Genie 4 with Gemini 4 Argon for Gemini Robotics work, including Apptronik’s Apollo humanoid playing checkers.

Where Trusted Testers Are Already Using It

Genie 4 is still experimental, and DeepMind has been working with trusted testers across creative industries, journalism, education, gaming and engineering. Filmmakers are testing it as a rapid draft mode for pre-visualization, stepping into a live simulation and running multiple takes in real time, adjusting camera angles, lighting, dialogue and action on the fly. Photojournalists are exploring how a single archival photograph can become a grounded simulation within seconds, and how dynamic worlds can help audiences experience historical spaces or visualise events such as a flash flood or a wildfire.

Game developers are using it to go from an idea to an explorable prototype in seconds, testing visual styles and interactive mechanics through prompts before writing engine code, while enterprise partners are evaluating it for rapid scenario generation. Robotics is the clearest long-term test, because a robot trained only in a laboratory will meet a messier world on deployment. DeepMind says Genie 4 can help develop training environments for robots and agents, letting AI systems be tested on how they navigate different environments before they are brought into the real world.

Limits, Safety Checks And Watermarks

DeepMind is unusually direct about what Genie 4 cannot yet do. While it can hold a coherent environment over short sessions, visual details and object permanence can still shift or drift over time, especially as a simulation runs longer, after multiple complex prompt edits, or while navigating through a scene. Complex physical interactions, real-time audio accuracy, rendering legible text, spatial accuracy and long-term consistency are all listed as active areas of research.

The safety approach follows the same staged logic. Genie 4 carries strict safety guardrails consistent with DeepMind’s policies for other models, and it went through internal safety evaluations before the preview, aimed at preventing harmful or malicious content. It is reaching trusted testers first so early feedback arrives before a broader release. For transparency, all video and audio generated by Genie 4 will include SynthID, Google’s imperceptible digital watermarking technology.

Why It Matters

Genie 4 matters because it moves the AI conversation from generating content to simulating consequences. A chatbot can describe how a flood might spread through a valley, and a video model can show a plausible version of it, but neither lets a planner, a journalist or a robotics engineer step inside the scenario, change a variable and watch what happens next. If world models become reliable enough, they become a new kind of laboratory: a place to rehearse decisions and test ideas that would be dangerous, expensive or impossible to try in reality.

Background

World models have been one of DeepMind’s longest-running research threads, built on the idea that understanding the world means being able to simulate it. Genie 4 brings that thread together with the Gemini family, and points toward hybrid models that combine language-model reasoning with pixel-level simulation.
