Google is expanding Financial Services Verification to the United States and Canada. The company announced on October 20 that the programme, which requires certain financial advertisers to prove they are authorised by regulators or recognised registries before running certain ads, will be introduced in the two North American markets in early 2027.

The check sits on top of advertiser identity verification. Google says more than 97 percent of the ads people see in the US and Canada already come from identity-verified advertisers, and Financial Services Verification adds a specialised credential check aimed at brand impersonation and financial scams.

Financial Services Verification In The US And Canada: What Changes In Early 2027

Under the policy, advertisers in scope must demonstrate that they are authorised by the relevant regulators or recognised registries before certain financial ads can run. Search Engine Land’s reporting of the announcement adds that verification procedures will differ between the US and Canada, that the requirements will be introduced gradually, and that advertisers who fail to complete required verification could face restrictions on the affected ads once enforcement begins.

This is an expansion, not a new invention. Google says the programme already protects approximately 2 billion internet users across 42 countries, and describes it as the broadest programme of its kind. Google was the first major platform to require this type of verification, starting in the United Kingdom in 2021 and most recently expanding across the European Union.

The upfront check is one layer of a wider system. Google says that in 2025 Gemini helped its systems catch over 99 percent of policy-violating ads before they ever served, blocking bad ads in real time — a figure the company carries with its source named, and which sits alongside the credential check rather than replacing it.

Bankers’ Registries, Country Rules And What Advertisers Should Expect

The registries are country-specific. In the US, Google is working with the American Bankers Association to use its dedicated registry to verify authorised banks before ads can run. In Canada, it is engaging with the Canadian Bankers Association as it prepares the rollout. Google says regulations differ across borders, so implementation is phased country by country, and the work complements the Global Signal Exchange, where it shares information across tech, finance and law enforcement to stop fraud.

For advertisers, the practical timeline starts before enforcement. Ahead of the planned early-2027 rollout, Google says it will provide country-specific information including accepted registries, required credentials and onboarding instructions. Once verification opens, advertisers will be notified if and when they need to complete the process, so businesses have guidance before policy enforcement begins.

The expansion follows the same pattern as Google’s other advertiser-gating moves, from in-account certification for online gambling advertisers to the business-name rules for advertisers whose name differs from their destination domain: prove the credential first, then advertise.

Why It Matters

The central entity is Financial Services Verification, and its defining attribute in this story is scope: the two largest North American ad markets join a programme already covering 42 countries and about 2 billion users. That connects the policy to its neighbours. For banks and lenders, the cost is compliance work — registrations and authorisation details must be accurate and ready before enforcement, in the middle of the normal Google Ads platform change cycle. For scammers, the impersonation route that depends on looking like a legitimate bank gets narrower, because identity alone no longer suffices. For the banking associations, their registries become part of Google’s ad-gating infrastructure, which gives the ABA and CBA a direct role in who can advertise financial products. And for Google, pairing an upfront credential check with automated systems it says caught over 99 percent of violating ads in 2025 strengthens its claim that the ads platform is safe and transparent.

Background

Google introduced Financial Services Verification in the United Kingdom in 2021, after regulators and consumer groups pressed platforms over scam investment ads, and later expanded it across the European Union. Advertiser identity verification came first and now covers the overwhelming majority of ads shown in North America; the financial programme adds the second, harder question — not just who the advertiser is, but whether a regulator says it may offer the financial service it is advertising.
