Google has begun testing ads in AI Mode for users who have connected their Google apps through Personal Intelligence, Search Engine Land reported on October 16. Google confirmed the test, reversing the ad-free start the feature had when Personal Intelligence launched in AI Mode. Google has also updated its privacy policy, effective October 16, to clarify how connected-app information may be used to personalise ads.
Personal Intelligence lets AI Mode draw on limited information from connected apps — insights and summaries, not raw content — to produce more relevant answers. Under the test, that same context may also personalise the ads shown in AI Mode, alongside the query, the AI response’s context and the user’s interests. Google says the protections are specific: connecting apps is opt-in and can be undone at any time, ads will not be based directly on Gmail inbox or Google Photos content, advertisers get no access to connected apps, and sensitive information will not be used for ad personalisation. Google has not announced advertiser controls, targeting options or a wider rollout.

Why it matters: AI Mode ads are where Google’s AI search becomes a media product, and Personal Intelligence gives those ads a context layer no keyword can provide. The change lands alongside a broader push to make AI answers more clickable for publishers, covered in Google Moves Links Higher In AI Overviews And AI Mode, and new budget controls for advertisers in Google Ads Adds Channel Prioritization And Budget Allocation Controls. Advertisers cannot buy this context yet, but the privacy-policy change shows the direction of travel.
