Drones inspecting power lines and industrial facilities

Percepto launched Axion on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, a hardware-agnostic Physical AI platform that turns drone and sensor inspection data into a continuously updated picture of mission-critical infrastructure, so operators of power grids, oil and gas facilities, and industrial sites can see which assets need attention before problems escalate. The Austin, Texas company is offering Axion as a software-as-a-service product, available from launch day, built on more than 160 specialized AI models trained on over 100,000 hours of real-world autonomous inspection data gathered across more than a decade.

One Platform, Whatever Flies Or Senses

The central change is openness. Until now, Percepto’s platform was closely tied to its own autonomous hardware. Axion breaks that link: it ingests data from supported third-party drone platforms, fixed and mobile sensors, and existing inspection archives, so an operator does not have to rip out its current fleet or its historical records to use it. Teams can start with the inspection data they already hold, then add Percepto’s own autonomous systems where they want more frequent coverage.

That matters because inspection programs rarely start from scratch. A utility or energy company may already fly several drone types, run fixed cameras, and sit on years of archived imagery. Axion organizes all of that by asset, combining it with asset context, historical trends, and expert-backed workflows, rather than leaving teams to stitch together separate reports. It can identify a downed wire by its relationship to surrounding components, or judge a thermal anomaly against expected asset behaviour and environmental conditions, with each finding backed by inspection history and expert validation.

Asking Questions In Plain Language

Axion also lets operators ask questions about their assets and inspection findings in plain language. Drawing on the data inside the platform, its AI capabilities deliver answers and recommendations, helping teams investigate issues and prioritize maintenance without piecing together separate reports.

The launch comes with a new leadership team for the software-first push, headed by chief executive Julien Bellanger and joined by chief revenue officer Kurt Nantkes and chief marketing officer Amir Khoshniyati. Bellanger said the company’s vision is to give operators a trusted understanding of what is happening across their infrastructure, with the foresight to protect the people and operations that depend on it, and that from day one a team can bring the inspection data it already has and see which assets need attention first.

Why The Timing Matters

Aging infrastructure and workforce shortages are putting growing pressure on the teams responsible for preventing outages, production losses, and safety incidents, Percepto said. Drone and sensor programs generate vast amounts of data, but reviewing it and deciding what requires action remain the bottleneck. Axion is aimed squarely at that gap: it surfaces the findings that matter so teams can cover more infrastructure with less manual review.

The company is also putting commercial weight behind the launch. Percepto said it has been awarded a multi-year contract by a leading United States energy company to support its transmission line inspection program, extending a long-standing partnership, with aerial data collection and AI-powered inspection analytics across the customer’s transmission network. The customer is not named, so the contract is best read as a signal of demand rather than a verified deployment at a named utility.

What To Watch Next

Two questions will decide whether Axion lives up to its pitch: how many third-party drone platforms and sensor types it supports well in practice, not just on a compatibility list, and whether operators accept AI-prioritized findings when the stakes are a live grid or a gas facility, where a missed defect and a false alarm both carry costs.

World models are pushing the same idea from the other direction, simulating environments so robots and agents can be trained safely before they touch the real world, while enterprise platforms are racing to turn AI conversation into completed work inside systems of record. Axion sits between those trends: it does not simulate the world, it watches the real one, and its value depends on how faithfully it reports what it sees.

Why It Matters

This matters because the physical world is where AI failures get expensive fastest. A wrong answer in a chatbot is embarrassing; a missed crack in a transmission line or a misread thermal anomaly can mean an outage, an environmental incident, or worse. If a hardware-agnostic platform can genuinely turn scattered inspection data into reliable, prioritized action, it lowers the barrier for every operator that already owns drones and sensors but lacks the software to make sense of them. If it cannot, it will join a long list of dashboards that promised clarity and delivered more data. The multi-year energy contract and the breadth of third-party support are the two milestones to watch.

Background

Founded in 2014 and headquartered in Austin, Texas, Percepto describes itself as a Physical AI company serving Fortune 500 organizations across power, oil and gas, and industrial sectors. Its operations are backed by a nationwide Federal Aviation Administration beyond visual line of sight waiver, and it is consolidating its engineering, manufacturing, and assembly in the United States. Its Ranger drones and Harbor stations collect fresh data for Axion where operators want it, but they are now optional, not mandatory.
