Google has launched Universal Cart in Google Search and the Gemini app in the United States, the company announced on October 15, just ahead of the holiday shopping season. Powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), Universal Cart lets shoppers add products from multiple retailers into a single cart and check out in one place using Google Pay.

Google describes Universal Cart as an “intelligent shopping cart and your new hub for shopping on Google.” Shoppers can save items they love from across retailers, track price changes on products in the cart and in their shopping history, and have available promo codes applied automatically at checkout. Google named Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart and Wayfair among the participating merchants, alongside many Shopify merchants. Google’s Vidhya Srinivasan confirmed the rollout on X on October 15. The launch builds on shopping changes Google has been layering into AI search, including the link updates covered in Google Moves Links Higher In AI Overviews And AI Mode.
Why it matters: Universal Cart moves the transaction itself inside Google’s surfaces. For retailers, being findable in Search is no longer the whole job — product feeds, pricing and promotions now need to be accurate enough for a cart Google controls, a shift that sits alongside the channel controls in Google Ads Adds Channel Prioritization And Budget Allocation Controls. For shoppers, the cart persists across sessions and surfaces, which makes Google, not the merchant’s own site, the place where the purchase is assembled.
