Google Lets Canada Buy Inside Gemini and AI Mode

Google is bringing checkout inside its AI tools to Canada. Starting this week, Canadian shoppers can buy directly from lululemon, Shoppers Drug Mart, Simons and select Shopify merchants without leaving AI Mode in Google Search or the Gemini app, paying with Google Pay. The rollout, announced November 4, is the first national expansion of the company’s Universal Commerce Protocol checkout beyond the United States and Australia, and it lands just as holiday shopping begins. Google says 59% of Canadian holiday shoppers plan to use an AI tool to help them shop this season.

What Canadian shoppers get

The experience starts where the shopping already happens. A Canadian shopper researching a product in AI Mode or chatting with Gemini can now complete the purchase in the same place, instead of being sent to a retailer’s website to check out. Google says the feature works with the payment methods and shipping details shoppers already have saved in Google Wallet.

There is one limit at launch. Lululemon says its first release supports single-item checkout only, with multi-item support coming later, and Google has not said when the other launch retailers will add it. Price alerts and loyalty rewards are also planned for the coming months rather than available today.

How the checkout works

Underneath the checkout sits the Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP, an open standard Google launched with industry partners earlier this year. It gives AI agents, shopping surfaces, retailers and payment providers a shared language for the whole journey, from discovery and buying through post-purchase support, so each side does not need a custom connection to every other.

The protocol is what makes the Canadian rollout more than a local feature launch. The same checkout already runs in the United States and Australia, and the Canadian version uses the same plumbing, which is why Google can extend it country by country instead of rebuilding it each time.

What retailers get

Retailers stay the seller of record, Google says, and can customise the integration to fit their own needs. That matters because the purchase happens inside Google’s interfaces: the retailer keeps the order, the tax and refund responsibilities, and the customer relationship, while Google supplies the storefront moment. Google Pay handles the payment; the merchant handles the rest.

Shopify, whose merchants are among the launch sellers, says its stores can now be bought from directly inside AI Mode and the Gemini app with no extra work on their side. The protocol handles the complexity underneath, according to Shopify product chief Mani Fazeli, so shoppers can buy what they find without leaving the conversation.

Broader access comes next year. Google says it will add simplified UCP integration directly inside Merchant Center, letting retailers switch on direct checkout and other listing capabilities from their own accounts instead of joining a launch group. No date has been given, and Google has not published eligibility rules for retailers outside the first four partners.

Why It Matters

This is Google’s clearest move to keep the transaction inside its AI surfaces. Shoppers who once clicked from Search to a store now have less reason to leave, and every purchase inside AI Mode or Gemini tells Google more about what people buy. For retailers, the trade is visibility against dependence: Google brings the customer, but the storefront is Google’s.

The timing is deliberate. Canada’s rollout arrives weeks before the holiday peak, when Google says most Canadian holiday shoppers expect to lean on AI, and it follows the same checkout’s earlier arrival in the United States and Australia. Rivals are moving the same way: Meta, Shopify and others are pushing agents that can complete a purchase, not just find one.

Background

Google launched UCP earlier this year alongside industry partners as an open standard for agentic commerce, and the direct checkout first appeared on eligible product listings in AI Mode and the Gemini app in the United States. The Canadian launch extends that same system to a third country, with Merchant Center integration still to come.
