SpaceXSI, the company behind Grok, has launched Grok for Startups, a credits program that gives young companies one shared balance to spend across Grok, Grok Build, Grok Bot and the Grok API. The application page is live on x.ai, and approved startups get a decision by email shortly after applying, with their first credits ready the same day. The program aims to cover six to twelve months of real usage, sized to each company’s stage and current usage.

What the program offers
The core of the program is a single credit balance that works everywhere. According to the program page, startups can use their credits on Grok, Grok Build, Grok Bot and the Grok API “without juggling separate grants”. Grok is the assistant built into X, Grok Build is the company’s coding agent, Grok Bot is its business agent, and the API opens the models to developers building their own products.
The landing page makes the pitch with working examples. An “Overheard on X” section showcases startups building with the tools: a cyberpunk street scene in Unreal Engine 5.8 generated end-to-end by Grok 4.5 and Grok Build, an app-and-landing-page builder switched over to Grok, and founders praising Grok Bot as a business agent that runs outreach and back-office work. The message is aimed squarely at technical founders choosing where to build.
Credits are sized to each company’s goals. SpaceXSI says it aims to offer six to twelve months of real usage, with the amount calibrated to the startup’s stage and how much it already uses. Approved companies receive 20 percent of their credits on approval, and the remaining 80 percent is released automatically once they are up and running. The program also promises hands-on onboarding and a direct line to the company’s startups team as the business grows.
How to apply
Applying takes about five minutes, according to the application page. Startups describe their company and how they plan to use Grok. SpaceXSI then verifies the company and its funding, sizes the credits to the startup’s stage and current usage, and sends a decision by email. If approved, the first set of credits is available the same day.
The program also has a partner track. Venture capital firms and accelerators can join as partners, which lets them bring the program to the startups in their portfolios rather than applying company by company.
Why It Matters
The launch puts SpaceXSI directly into the startup-credits race that cloud providers and model labs have been running for years. AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft all court early-stage companies with free credits, betting that startups which build on their stack become paying enterprise customers later. SpaceXSI is making the same bet with a twist: instead of infrastructure credits, it is offering model and agent credits across four products at once, which targets the exact moment when a young company is choosing which AI platform to standardize on.
The structure of the deal matters too. Releasing 80 percent of the credits only after onboarding filters out companies that apply and never build, while the six-to-twelve-month horizon is long enough for a startup to ship a real product on the platform. For developers already comparing assistants, how Grok differs from ChatGPT is the practical question the credits are meant to answer.
Background
SpaceXSI is the current name of the company formerly known as xAI, the maker of Grok. The company has been expanding Grok beyond the X social network into standalone products: Grok Build for coding, Grok Bot as a business agent, and a public API for developers. The startups program is its most direct attempt yet to win over the developer ecosystem that decides which models get built into the next generation of software.
